Who is this app for?

Picture the Sentence is a terrific choice for children who need help with:

  • receptive language development at the sentence level
  • visualizing and conceptualizing what words mean
  • auditory memory and attention
  • preposition knowledge
  • pronoun comprehension (he, she, they)

What does your child need? Consider a hierarchy that slowly moves your child from easy/successful tasks to gradually more demanding ones.

Choose the difficulty level

Slow, with visual support? (Easy) Visual support that disappears? (Intermediate) or fast speech with no visual support (Advanced)

Wait Time

A sandtimer can be set to have the child use strategies such as subvocalizing or visualizing to remember the sentence before being asked to find the matching picture.  Real-life listening and following directions requires a way to hold on to the auditory information long enough to carry out the task. Use Wait Time to practice these skills!

What kind of visual cues?

Choose from color drawings, stick figures or NO visual supports at all.

Working on pronouns?

Select pronouns he, she and they to help the child "picture" what these words represent.

What kind of sentence type?

Start with simple subject + verbs and move to gradually longer sentences.

Check out the Easy Level Sample Activity

Listen to the sentence. As each word is spoken, a visual icon is shown and stays on the screen. A plain white, uncluttered background is key to helping the child stay focused on the task.

(We are showing it here with the text on so you can see the words)

Then Wait Time

You can set the length or turn it off, but we suggest working up to at least 20 seconds so the child learns how to keep the sentence in his/her mind, using auditory memory strategies.

Find the picture that matches the meaning of the target sentence.

Easy level has 3 choices.

Play the Door Game for a Break! Find the Animal

Set the interval you want to use

After each sentence, after 3, 5 etc..

Here is a sample of an Intermediate Level Activity

(We are showing it here with the text on so you can see the words)
